Phelps suspended over 'pot pipe'
The US swimmer Michael Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months after photographs were published appearing to show him smoking cannabis.
USA Swimming, the sport's governing body in the US, said no "anti-doping rule" had been violated.
But the federation said it wanted to send a strong message to Phelps because he had disappointed so many people.
Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and has been feted as one of the world's greatest athletes.
The ban will end in time for him to prepare for the US Championships on 7 July, which act as a trial for the World Championships in Rome two weeks later.
Phelps, 23, was caught on camera inhaling from a type of glass pipe which can be used for smoking cannabis.

The photo, which appeared in Britain's News of the World newspaper, was said to have been taken at a student party last November when Phelps was on a long break from training.
The Olympic star has apologised for his "regrettable behaviour", but did not say whether he had taken drugs.
USA Swimming said in a statement: "This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated.
"But we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.
"Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust."
USA Swimming has cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period.
Cereal and snack firm Kellogg has also reportedly said it will not renew a sponsorship contract with Phelps, on the grounds his behaviour is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg".
Swimming's governing body Fina and the International Olympic Committee have both accepted his apology.
Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, told the Baltimore Sun newspaper: "I think it sends a message to Michael, and we're certainly going to abide by it.
"He's eager to be back in training, and looking to move forward."
Phelps used an interview with his hometown newspaper on Thursday to admit that he had "clearly made a mistake", but denied that he used marijuana regularly.

Dhoni, Gambhir help India take series lead
Dambulla: An unflappable Mahendra Singh Dhoni led by example as India relied on a clinical all-round display to thrash Sri Lanka by six wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series in Dambulla on Wednesday.
Chasing 247, India rode on substantial contributions from Gautam Gambhir (62) and Suresh Raina (54) before losing both the set batsmen but Dhoni (61 not out) was his composed self as he guided the team to victory with 11 balls to spare.
The ageing Sanath Jayasuriya's 28th ODI century went in vain as the Indians never allowed the islanders to break loose on a slow track. Kumar Sangakkara contributed 44 as Sri Lanka posted 246 for seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Both the teams now move to Colombo for the second match on Saturday.
This was India's sixth ODI win in a row, coming after their 5-0 whitewash of England at home.
With a hip injury keeping Virender Sehwag out of action and Sachin Tendulkar (5) back in the hut in the fourth over, the chase on a sluggish track was far from easy. But with Gambhir and Raina on song, India hardly had a reason to worry.
The left-handed duo went on to stitch together a 113-run stand for the second wicket which laid the perfect foundation for a successful chase, besides offsetting the setback of losing Tendulkar early in the innings.
Thilan Thushara's ball had pitched bit outside the leg stump before rapping Tendulkar's pad and Kumar Dharmasena, making his ODI debut as umpire, took his time before upholding the vociferous appeal.
The Gambhir and Raina partnership laid the patform for the other batsmen as the visitors chased down the highest-ever total at this venue which has so far hosted 26 matches. Gambhir and Raina, however, were a trifle lucky.
Early in his innings, a diving Nuwan Kulasekara apparently caught Gambhir off his own bowling but repeated replays proved inconclusive and the Delhi left-hander eventually had the benefit of doubt.
Raina, on his part, was spilled at point by Tillakaratne Dilshan off Thushara when he was on seven.
But once they got their eyes in, there was no stopping the Indians. Gambhir milked the Lankan attack with consummate ease and often stepped out to unsettle them. A streaky boundary off Dilshan brought up his fifty but his audacious bid to hit Muttiah Muralitharan out of the park saw him perish at long-off.

Emicles Da Mata claims he suffered serious injury Dec. 7 at the hands of Beckham's unnamed right-hand man, who is also named by the moniker Doe 1 as a defendant in the complaint.
Per the suit, Doe 1's "oppressive and despicable" actions included grabbing the plaintiff's camera and throwing it in a trash can, and then "violently" beating him when he got out of his car to retrieve it.
An eyewitness told E! News at the time that Da Mata had been trailing Beckham and wife Victoria when the Brit got out of his car and approached the paparazzo's vehicle, enticing him to come out. Per our source, when Da Mata refused to budge, Beckham's muscle went around to the passenger side and started throwing punches.
"They just can't do this," Da Mata said. "They put me on the floor, they got my camera, and they threw it in the trash can. They can't do this to us."
A police report was taken at the scene, but no criminal charges were ever filed in the incident.
Da Mata is claiming assault and battery, negligence, negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress and conversion. He is seeking unspecified damages.

Hayden dropped from one-day squads
Matthew Hayden is clinging to his international career after being told he is not in Australia's limited-overs plans. Hayden, who had an awful Test summer of 149 runs at 16.55, was omitted as the selectors looked to players who could be part of the World Twenty20 in England in June and the 2011 World Cup.
Despite his poor returns since overcoming a long-term heel injury, Hayden has won team support to push on to the Ashes. However, Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, has softened his stance by refusing to say Hayden is a certainty for the series in South Africa starting next month.
"We are moving on," Hilditch said of the decision in Sydney. "There is no doubt our advance plans were for Matthew to go through to the Ashes. That would be our ideal outcome. We've got to sit down as a panel to make a decision whether it's still the way to go."
Hayden said he would take his time while deciding what to do next. "My immediate future is to go back home to my family and the people that love me the most and just enjoy this time, to take guard again," Hayden told the Australian. "It's been a pretty long last four months. I am going to take the time to get my mind around what the future does hold."
However, Hayden said he would play out the summer and would continue with Queensland. "When you are short of runs you have to start asking questions and they [the selectors] do that better than anyone," he said. "For my mind it's as simple as being committed to playing out the summer and then taking the time to either get back on the horse or make a decision not to. It's as clear cut as that."
Hilditch said Hayden was "not particularly happy" when told of his sacking. "I have no idea what he's going to do," Hilditch said. "My feeling is he will go and play for Queensland and make sure he gets on the South African tour."
Hayden scored 31 and 39 in the third Test victory and will have to wait until early February to learn whether he remains part of the five-day squad. Twenty20 engagements fill most of the domestic calendar this month but there is a round of Sheffield Shield games before the squad will be finalised.
Hilditch said dropping Hayden from the one-day squad was not linked to his performances over the past six months. "This would have been the decision whatever Matthew was doing in Test cricket," Hilditch said. "It's unfortunate for Matthew and it wasn't an easy thing to tell him."
The last of Hayden's 161 one-day matches came in the finals loss to India in the CB Series last March. He scored 6133 runs, with his best being the Australian-record 181 against New Zealand in 2007, and was a star of the following World Cup success, thrashing 659 runs at 73.22. He was also part of the 2003 victory in South Africa.
Australia will play Twenty20 games against South Africa in Melbourne on Sunday and Brisbane on Tuesday before the five-match one-day international series begins at the MCG on Friday. David Warner, the New South Wales batsman, has been called in to the squad while Ryan Harris, the Queensland allrounder, is another new face.
Michael Clarke will miss the shorter games due to ligament damage to his right thumb, which he sustained during the first Test in Perth, but is hopeful of being fit for the ODI campaign. Mitchell Johnson has been rested until the third CB Series fixture due to his heavy workload since the India tour.

Three giants collide as battle for top spot hots up
Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith and MS Dhoni, three men with one new year resolution, to take their team to the top of the ICC Test rankings.
"I think the balance of power is evening out in world cricket. Credit to Australia they have dominated world cricket for decade or so and they obviously enjoyed their time and it doesn't mean they are going to be beaten in future tours or going to be easy to beat," said Graeme Smith after South Africa clinched the three-Test series 2-0 against Ponting's men.
Australia are much like a wounded tiger, losing two out of the last three series in 2008 has been a hard blow for a proud cricketing outfit. If another loss comes in the new year Test at Sydney, their crown will pass on.
"International sport and life is all about ups and downs, this year for us had been an indifferent one but its been a learning curve and a learning year for us all. Even me who has played nearly 130 tests, you learn something from every game that you play," stated Ponting.
They will learn, but to the keen eye the gap hasn't just narrowed between Australia and the rest, the men from down under are left to play catch-up.
"We have seen the end of the last men standing; the Haydens, the Symonds and probably Brett Lee too. They need to find some new people. India and South Africa are the two stand-out sides," opined former player and cricket writer Peter Roebuck.
But even in the gloom of the decline, the man at the helm of Aussie cricket holds out hope.
"I'm still very positive and very sure that with some of these younger guys coming through and coming on in a few years time that we can get back up there and be dominating world cricket once again," said Ponting.
So 2009 will be the story of this three-horse race and cricket fans will be looking forward to the ride.
Proteas press on for top spot
Sydney - Momentum has been the key ingredient in the Proteas' march on history over the past two years which culminated in the back-to-back wins against Australia in Perth and Melbourne and which saw South Africa record their first series victory Down Under.
The Proteas will officially take over the mantle of the No 1 Test team if they can complete a 3-0 series whitewash with victory in Sydney next week, and Proteas vice-captain Ashwell Prince today stressed the need to maintain momentum going into the final Test at the SCG.
"This third Test is important for the rest of the summer," Prince said at a press conference in Sydney on Wednesday.
"We have to play Australia at home and to win this match would keep the momentum with us. Momentum is important and we certainly don't want to give it back to them."
Prince said South Africa were also keen to avoid losing another "dead rubber" Test.
"(In) England... we led 2-0 and we were a bit disappointing going into the fourth Test," he said. "We don't want to make the same mistakes."
Prince, a pillar of the side over the past two years in which the Proteas have not been beaten in a Test series, missed the first two Tests due to a cracked left thumb picked up on the eve of the first Test.
His absence gave JP Duminy a chance on the big stage and the 24-year-old has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring the winning runs in his second-innings half-century in Perth and then hitting an epic, match-turning 166 at the MCG.
"It's been a bit weird. Obviously I would have liked to have played a part in the two matches," Prince said. "We all knew what calibre of player JP Duminy was and he didn't disappoint. All credit to him, the way he handled himself... for a young guy I think it was an outstanding performance."
Prince will give his injured thumb a test tomorrow at the first practice at the SCG.
"I'm over 50 percent, it's probably 60-40 towards me being fit, (but) whether I'm selected is another question all together," he said.
As for celebrations in the wake of the series-clinching win, Prince admitted: "The boys were very excited, we had a proper party last night."
And while the 2008 Proteas team has matured into a formidable unit with few glaring weaknesses, skipper and opening batsman Graeme Smith and fast bowler Dale Steyn have taken the individual plaudits.
The Proteas can attribute much of their success this year - 11 wins, two draws and two defeats in 15 Tests, and series wins in England and Australia - to the batting exploits of Smith and Steyn's brilliant bowling.
Smith - also a vastly improved captain from the last time South Africa toured Australia - scored 1,656 runs at an average of 72, and his tally was the third-highest in a calendar year in the history of the game, behind only the 1,788 runs Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf amassed in 2006 and the 1,710 the legendary West Indian Viv Richards tallied in 1976.
Smith hit six Test centuries in 2008,contributing scores of 48, 108, 62 and 75 in the first two Tests against Australia. Previously he struggled against them, with only one half-century in eight Tests.
Steyn was the man of the match in the second Test at the MCG for his bowling and batting heroics, and his 10-wicket haul gave him 74 scalps for the year, at an average of 20.01.
South Africa's batting strength was underlined by the presence of Hashim Amla (fourth, 1,161 runs), Neil McKenzie (seventh, 1,071) and AB de Villiers (10th, 1,061) in the top 10 leading run-scorers. Other Proteas bowlers to shine in 2008 were Makhaya Ntini (sixth, 54 wickets) and Morne Morkel (ninth, 43 wickets).
Dhoni gets extortion letter
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been provided with extra security after reportedly receiving an extortion letter demanding Rs50 lakh (US$ 103,091). News reports say his security has been upgraded to ‘Z’ category – the highest level in India - and he has a 45-strong team protecting him. Police officials said Dhoni's family received the extortion letter on Monday. Earlier this month, Dhoni travelled unescorted to the Ranchi airport after seemingly being unsatisfied with the level of security given to him. He also applied for a licence for a .9mm pistol.
